ikan ELITE Prompter Review

ikan – known for being a manufacturer and distributor of video production support – have released a teleprompting app for the iPad, ELITE Prompter.

We got our hands on the new ELITE Prompter iPad iOS app and tested it out.

First impressions of the app is great. It looks good, and is packed full of features. When the iPad first came out, there was a rash of ‘teleprompting’ apps released but no one had really thought about their actual use and what functions and features they should have. ikan’s ELITE Prompter app ticks all the boxes you’d want, including: a rich text editor, 100 speed increments for precise speed control, cue points and video output support (using an Apple AV adaptor). Some extra nice additions include Adobe Story and Dropbox integration. It’s all very well using your iPad for teleprompting but you’ve gotta get your scripts onto it. And there’s only so many times you can copy and paste text back and forth from emails into different apps without going slightly insane. And you just know someone will want to make some last minute revisions! The ELITE Prompter is great in this respect – and thank you Mr ‘Cloud’ for making life that bit easier… It’s worth noting that ikan have collaborated with Adobe Story to develop the prompter software and make the integration as seamless as possible. The support page on the ikan ELITE Prompter website is very good should you need it.

Another handy feature is the bluetooth keyboard support.

There’s optional on screen controls for the actual teleprompter control but using a bluetooth keyboard offers a more elegant solution. Perhaps in the future, a bespoke bluetooth prompter controller would work better? It would help those old school teleprompter operators anyway!

Along with the ELITE Prompter iPad app, ikan also have a large selection of mounting options – there’s simple iPad brackets right up to full traditional teleprompter kits, with a range of compatibility for different size cameras. Who’d have thought you could get a teleprompter for a Canon 5D or other DSLR?!

It’s worth checking out the RSS news feed at the top right of the app – there’s some killer deals on there from ikan that don’t seem to be available anywhere else. Let’s hope that’s a permanent feature!

So what’s the verdict?

The ikan ELITE Prompter app is a well thought out product that offers all the features you’d want – and more importantly, expect. Ok, it’s not going to replace traditional teleprompter systems but it offers a great solution for smaller productions – news, corporate shoots, speeches etc. It’s also a nice back up solution for when your teleprompter operator leans over to you moments before you go live to say their kit’s gone down. We’ve all been there…

Trickbox TV are definitely going to make sure there’s an iPad with the ELITE Prompter app on it for any of our productions from now on.

   the RSS sales are indeed a permanent feature, exclusive to the app. our best deals and sales, not offered through the ikan Outlet, will be featured there. its almost worth purchasing the app simply for the sale prices!
